Charlton Gateway is a proposed development to regenerate the Stone Foundries site.
Our proposals
GLi is proposing to build a data centre on the Stone Foundries site, which sits behind Derrick and Atlas Gardens.
Our draft plans would:
- Make a major contribution to the local and borough economy, with a substantial business rate rise of £6.4 million per year and approximately £32 million gross value added (GVA) to help local council services.
- Improve the infrastructure in Charlton Riverside by helping to extend Herringham Road to the north of the site to connect with routes across the riverside.
- Look at reusing the waste heat generated by the data centre so neighbouring homes can benefit from it.
- Include new green spaces for the local community, including a park behind Atlas & Derrick Gardens. You can view the proposed green areas on our website here.
If approved, our plans would deliver a greener, cleaner, and quieter site that serves the community. This includes improving cycle and pedestrian routes, reducing industrial vehicle movements, and providing community and workplace spaces for local businesses.

What is a data centre?
A data centre is a building which stores digital information.
They are essential for powering everyday activities including sending emails and accessing personal data like emails and online banking.
The need for data storage has increased in the age of digital innovation, meaning the UK is short of capacity for online services to run smoothly. This makes it harder for businesses to stay competitive and for our public services such as the NHS to digitalise, limiting the country’s opportunities for economic growth and undermining national security.
The data centre proposed at Charlton Gateway would not be used for AI. It is instead being designed to support the everyday digital services that people, businesses and public services rely on. This includes things like online banking, streaming, video calls, business systems, healthcare records and the storage of photos and emails.
